After spending more of his youth tugging on clam rakes than he did in classrooms, and most of his adult years dealing with the not so honest characters of New York City’s toughest fish markets, Evert Bay Scott decided to write of it. He wanted to tell of his life and take his readers out there with him, along the shores of Long Island. Mr. Scott takes you on board telling about the run-ins, characters and con men that he came to know on the darker side of the clamming game; the side he wound up on. So hold on tight, this adventure on the Great South Bay is about to set sail!

The Bay Men A Clammer Story Evert Bay Scott Books

This book took me down Memory Lane like a car without brakes. The Bay Men took me back to the days when my husband was a South Bay clammer in the 1970's. Although he could make decent money working legitimately, the only way to make big money was to work outside the confines of the law. He knew who the poachers were and where they worked but was always tight lipped when conservation officers regularly pressed him for information while inspecting his catch. There was a very good reason most clams couldn't be legally harvested, they weren't safe to consume. It broke his heart when he would read about hundreds of people getting sick from eating tainted shellfish at a company picnic, so taking clams under the cover of darkness from uncertified waters was never an option for him.
The Bay Men is a well written, albeit painful, reminder of the days when Long Islanders would say to each other, "If you love clams on the half shell, you better be darn sure of where they came from."
If you can remember when you could practically walk from the south shore of Long Island to Fire Island on the clam boats, then The Bay Men is a book for you. It presents the very real side of a few clammers who could make more in two hours poaching at night than they could in eight hours during the day.

The Bay Men A Clammer Story Evert Bay Scott Books Reviews

The story caught my attention right away. I thought it was real fun and it really did take me on a ride. I live on the Island and now I'm wondering, What did go on out there? It's a fast read, worth the time. I only wished it went on. Real neat!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end, the life of Mr. Scott was interesting to say the least. It was exciting to learn about the things that go on it places you would least expect it. It's Sopranos meets the clamming industry. I recommend this book to everyone and look forward to EBS's next book.
Someone I was familiar with wrote this autobiography taking place oin Long Island years ago. Easy to read writing style and story content made it difficult to put down - thoroughly enjoyed !
The coolest book ever! I worked on the Great South Bay in the seventies and remember some of this like it was yesterday. The author really hits home with me. From the opening to the end it's great. It's a time I hope I'll never forget. It should be on the big screen!
